Research: Diminished Reality

Introduction

Diminished reality (DR) research is related to the field of augmented reality (AR). In both cases a system provides users an indirect view of the world that has been modified. While AR systems add content to images, DR systems try to remove objects from scenes i.e. diminish objects. The following images demonstrate this concept:

Various different approaches to diminished reality exist. Our research mainly focuses on multi-camera systems where a set of cameras is used to diminish objects in real time.
